Richard Skeen

Richard “Dick” Skeen was born February 15, 1928, to John R. and Inez Skeen of Hyattville. In his youth the family lived in camps while his dad worked construction building roads through Yellowstone National Park. At the age of 11 his dad died so he, his mother, and brother returned to Hyattville. Later his mother married Slim Greer and the family moved to the ranch in Hyattville, giving Dick plenty of ranch chore responsibilities. During his early teens and high school, he broke horses for Slim. He worked part time work for the Hyatt Ranch trailing cows and breaking colts, and also cowboyed for the Hayes Ranch. After his marriage to Dorothy Myers in 1952, they moved to Worland where he was contracted to build an arena for the Wyoming State Boys School. He also did day work for various ranches in Hyattville. He later became a Wyoming brand inspector working first in Torrington and later in Powell. Dick and Dorothy ultimately purchased an 80-acre farm near Powell, where they ran cattle and built an arena to host ropings every weekend. During the summer months they became very active with the Cody Night Rodeo, Dick was a judge and Dorothy was a timer. Around 1981 he managed the Fiddleback Ranch for Bob Stoddard at Bill before moving back to Thermopolis.
