Neal Schuman was born on March 16, 1938, to Philip and Pauline Schuman who had moved to the United States from Russia to start a better life for them and their family. Neal grew up in Clearmont, where he and his sisters helped their parents’ farm and ranch on leased property. He finished high school and started attending Sheridan College to begin his degree in Veterinary Medicine. Shortly after starting college, he was asked to come home and help on the ranch. They purchased a ranch out of Clearmont and continued to operate both places. Neal and his high school sweetheart, Anita, were married in Rapid City, and then ranched with his parents, before buying more land on their own. This includes the Tipperary Ranch, which they bought in 1991. He raised and trained horses including several noteworthy ones: Buck, Nifty, Peanuts, Shoty, and Goblin.
