Maurice Williams

Maurice Williams was born on April 24, 1908, on Raven Creek south of Moorcroft and attended school there. He spent most of his 85 years working on ranches. In his youth and later he worked on the family ranch on Raven Creek and on other ranches during spring roundup gathering, roping, and branding. A few of the cattle outfits were the George Keeline Cattle Company near Gillette, the Eaton Dude Ranch breaking and training polo ponies near Wolf, and the American Cattle Co. near Lance Creek and south of Moorcroft. During the 1920s and 30s he broke and trained horses all over the eastern part of the state. In 1938, he put together his own ranch in the Beulah, Houston Creek, and Bearlodge Mountain areas. A year later, he married Byrne Luse. They had three daughters. His brands were and still are the “+I+,” “I-U” and “scissors.” During the earlier years, he trailed cattle from the Beulah ranch through Sundance to Houston Creek and up to the Bearlodge Mountains. He was a member of the Wyoming Stock Growers for 42 years.
