Gary was born in Gillette to Vince and Leola Thar. As soon as he could be alone on a horse, he was trailing cattle and lending a hand on the ranch. By age eight, Gary was a full-time hand on his father’s custom haying crew every summer until he went to college. After graduating from Moorcroft High School in 1966, Gary attended the National College of Business in Rapid City, SD. While in college Gary started working for Richard (Dick) Taylor. It was on the Taylor Ranch that he met his wife, Susie (Taylor) Thar. Gary worked for Taylor until November of 1968 when he joined the Air Force. Following his service Gary and Susie moved into the Taylor Homestead in Rapid Valley where they stayed until 1977 when they moved to Campbell County where he and a partner started Thar’s Feed and Ranch Supply. In the early 1990s with three sons and a newly acquired lease on the family’s homestead, Gary started a registered Angus herd. Thar’s Feed & Ranch Supply was owned by Gary for 40 years. He ran a successful business while raising three kids and running a ranch. In 2017, the business was sold to a long- time employee. Beyond being a businessman, Gary dedicated his time to the communities of Campbell County. Gary is a supporter of 4-H and FFA and served on the Youth Livestock Sale Committee for a few years.
